Strange days.

Upon reflection, I realize that it was both one of the most troubling and interesting times of my life. I doubt very many other people in the world can chalk up what happened to me in just a short time, as a comparison to any adventures they had in their whole lives. Yes, it was a grand time for me. I almost lost myself from time to time. But, I’m getting ahead of myself. I should really start from the beginning.

I was in my early adulthood. I had graduated from High School a few years back, yet had made no plans to attend any form of post secondary education; mainly because I had no interest in very much of anything. But I’m branching off again. I was stuck working in a general store, dealing with moronic customers, and other vagrant types who just loved to come in and demonstrate their higher patterns of thinking. Mostly by doing stupid things. Like the annoying mental case who came into the store 4 times a day and said the exact same things, or the elderly people who really weren’t in to shop, but to stare at everyone else leading a productive life.

I wasn’t much better than some folks most of the time. I lived my life one moment at a time, not really looking to the future. My life was about getting through the night without incident, and awaiting payday. Today was another one of those boring days, and it was beginning as it always did. My alarm started blaring, and was soon given a proper send off through my 30th story window…

“Ugh… I gotta stop doing that. Those blasted things aren’t cheap...”

The figure slowly pulled the tangled mass of bed sheets off its fallen form, and rose of the makeshift bed. Said bed was little more than a large circular mass of soft things, piled into the center of the bedroom. The bedroom itself was a relatively small thing, about 20’ square, with high ceilings. Various posters littered the wall and ceiling, depicting epic battle scenes between giant robots, or pictures of mythical creatures such as dragons and Minotaurs.

Other than that, there was only a closet, small dresser, and a pile of dirty laundry filling the room. Quite a lot of wasted space when you think about it. Upon standing up, the lone figure revealed himself to be a male human of young age, around his 20’s, and slim as a rail. Almost to the point of being frail, leaning more to being wiry. Said human scratched himself in several places, pulled on a semi-clean pair of pants and a shirt, then stumbled into the kitchen. The thick hearty smell of coffee soon spread its way through apartment, and the human went to sit on his futon. Looking out the window, he could see a sea of other apartment buildings flowing down the various streets of downtown Tokyo. Why a North American person was living in Tokyo was anyone’s guess, but he had his reasons. For example, he learned how to speak Japanese in school, and decided to put it to use in one of the best places. Little did he know he’d land a shitty job, and just barely make enough yen to get by every month. He didn’t complain however, as he enjoyed being in this area of the world.

Turning on the TV, Japanese cartoons soon filled the air with their high-pitched language and sound bites. That was a perk to living in Japan, the quality media any anime buff would drool over.

Dragging himself away from another quality episode of Digimon, the person slapped on his nametag, and got himself a cup of coffee. Dave was the name printed on the glossy nametag, followed by a kanji translation below it. Sipping his coffee, he fished out some cold rice and chicken for breakfast. One thing the Japanese folks sure knew, was how to eat.

His little morning ritual of food, anime, and scratching himself soon wore down, and it was time to head off to work. That Dave’s morning happened to start around 2pm never fazed him in the least, as he took the elevator down to the bottom floor. Stepping outside, and over the broken remains of his alarm clock, he casually walked down the street to his job. Dave was a little over 6 feet tall, which suited him fine in this crowded metropolis of 5-foot tall people. Nobody really noticed his passage as he walked the 2 blocks to work, entering via the back entrance. It was a family run store, and he was the only non-family member to work there. Kaiju-San was the father of the family, and the one who did most of the book keeping. His wife tended the children upstairs, thus Dave and Kaiju-san we’re the only ones who ever really did anything on the floor. It was a two-way split shift. The other man opened the store in the morning, and ran it by himself until mid day. Then Dave arrived, and helped out until dinnertime, when the man went upstairs to his family. Then Dave was left alone to run the store solo, until 11pm when it closed. This suited the pair fine, as said store was not really busy. But they managed to pull in enough that Dave’s paydays we’re always the same.

“Good morning Kaiju-San. Has it been a busy morning?”
The middle aged man turned around, and smiled at Dave. He thought of him as a member of the family most days, and the two got along rather well.

“Hai Dave-san. But nothing I could not handle. You know where to start.”
“Hai.”

Dave put on a green apron, and began to sweep up any debris from in front of the store. Once finished there, he assumed his usual post behind the till, with a magazine in hand. Thus began another day of work. The older man never bothered him with his reading, as Dave put down the magazine the moment a customer approached the till. They lived in a good neighborhood, so never had any problems with criminal activity. Just the odd loiterer in front of the store, and a few customers that nobody could ever like.

Hours past, and Dave rung in countless sales. From the till sheet, he could see that today was a good day indeed, and they we’re doing more than usual. This would make Kaiju-san very happy indeed. Maybe he would invite Dave for dinner again! This thought pleased Dave very much, as he liked to dine on oriental food whenever possible. This wasn’t too hard based on where he was living, but he usually lived off fast foods and the like. McRice got rather boring after a while, and a home cooked meal was always welcome.

About halfway through his shift, a customer Dave had never seen before arrived at the store. This was not uncommon, as every now and again people from outside the neighborhood decided to shop somewhere different. Dave shrugged it off, and glanced at his watch. 7:46pm, July 3, 2002.

“Hello sir. How may I help you today?”

The older man had beaten him to the greeting as usual. It was a little game they had going.

“I’m merely looking at your wares. I have no need of help at the moment. Arigato.”
“Hai.”

Just another customer Dave thought, nothing to worry about. Turning his attention back to his magazine, he dove into an article about fantasy creatures, and games based off them. Things like that had always turned his crank. Raising his gaze momentarily, he saw that the customer was staring him right in the face. Mildly startled, he snapped off a brief bow at the waste, and apologized for not noticing.

“Sorry! Can I help you?” “Hai. Tell me, what is an American like yourself doing here in Japan?”
“Well, actually I’m Canadian. But it’s all the same. I moved here after I graduated from school, as I wanted to see more of the world. I liked what I saw here in Tokyo, so I decided to stay.”
“Why haven’t bettered yourself any more?”

That was a very strange remark from a customer, yet Dave decided to ignore it.

“Pardon sir?” “Never mind, you probably don’t know yet. May I have the paper?”
“Hai!”

Dave gave the strange remarks no notice, and promptly fetched the local paper from behind the counter. Placing it on the counter top, Dave accepted the few Yen notes the customer handed him, and gave him his change. The mysterious man gave a slight incline of his head, left some coins on the counter as a tip, and promptly walked out the door. Looking down at the pile, Dave could see that there was barely enough coin there to buy half a chocolate bar, but it was the thought that counted. Upon closer inspection however, he noticed a strange coin and a slip of paper under the mass of loose change. Pocketing the real money, Dave inspected the odd coin, and the paper.

He couldn’t identify the coin at all, as it was covered in runes and kanji that he’d never seen before. Assuming it was old currency, he placed it in his top shirt pocket for later. The paper proved more interesting. It simply read: ‘Wake up, I’ll be waiting.’ This in itself left Dave slightly insecure, and a little confused. Again shrugging it all off, he pocked the paper with the coin, and went about his day.

The rest of the evening went by without incident, and soon it was time to close. Just as he was leaving, the older man came downstairs with a plastic dish full of sushi. He handed it to Dave, and waved him off for the night.

“See you the day after next Dave-san. Enjoy your day off.”
“Domo arigato Kaiju-san. I shal see you then.”

Dave’s evening passed by as it usually did, as he sat in front of the TV, ate his dinner, and pondered what to do for the rest of the evening. He had a sudden urge to use his computer, and set it to boot up as he made another pot of coffee. Once his OS had loaded, he checked the alignment on his satellite modem, and accessed the Internet. His e-mail was low as usual, so he surfed around to his usual hangouts. Places relating to the type of fantasy creatures and games that he liked mostly.

His evening passed by rapidly, and soon it was time to get to bed. Taking off his clothes, he put the loose change in his moneybox. Then he remembered the paper, and the odd coin. After looking at the paper again for a moment, he tacked it onto the wall. The coin however he rubbed a few times as he thought about it, chipping off the odd flake of accumulated dirt. He noticed this, and began to work a little harder to clean off the strange coin. It became apparent that it was a very interesting coin indeed, as its silver luster brightened considerably. The coin itself appeared to be two semi-circles fused together with a raised strip of metal, with a few runes decorating the circumference. At the very top of the two semi circles, there was a horizontal line, and two small dots in the center of the little separated areas.

“Damn, I don’t think this is a coin. I wonder if that man gave me this by mistake? I should keep it on me should he come back and ask for it.”

With that he placed it in the little pocket of his boxer shorts, and went to sleep. He had no idea why he was compelled to sleep with it rather than place the coin into his pants, but the thought didn’t disturb him as he went to sleep.

His dreams were the same type of dream he always had. Dreams of the anime shows he watched on TV, others about epic adventures and mythical beasts. During one of the latter dreams however, the focus seemed quite heavy on a large blue dragon. This dragon was strange in itself, as it was not like its quadrapedal brethren. No, this one walked upright like a man, and was nearing 20’ in height. Its frame was covered in rippling muscles, and sealed in with a thick hide, and thicker scales. Suddenly Dave was seeing himself in the dream, almost as if he was standing off to the side. The mighty dragon-man walked over, and stood towering above his frail body.

“I told you I would be waiting Dave-san. WAKE UP!”

His eyes sprang open rapidly, and he launched into a sitting position. His pile of soft things was mildly dispersed, but easily fixable.

“What the hell was that?”

Cried a confused and disturbed Dave. He glanced at his wristwatch, and saw that it was mid morning. Sighing to himself, he decided to start the day early, and get out of bed. Coffee was made as usual, as was the leftover dinner Kaiju-san had prepared. It was still good, and quickly consumed. Dave went back to the kitchen soon after, grabbing more food to eat. He was unusually hungry this morning, but shrugged it off as something to do with the spooky dream. Scratching his side as usual, he didn’t notice the red rash he had all along his left side, and down to his leg.

Dressing in a loose fitting pair of shorts, and a T-shirt with a big red oriental dragon upon it, Dave pronounced himself ready for the day. His first stop was the bathroom, and then to the local electronics store. Upon stepping inside, the short man behind the till perked up immediately.

“Ah! Dave-san! Another alarm clock learned to fly?”
“Very funny Hohiro-san. The usual please.”
“Hai.”

The short little man ran off into the back, and fetched a simple alarm clock. The same model Dave had bought 20 or more times since moving to Tokyo. Paying for it, he promptly left before the slightly moronic man could start up any senseless chatter. It was a relatively quick hop back to his apartment to drop off his new clock, but then he was stuck with another problem. Just what was he to do on his day off?

He decided to visit a club that was in another part of the downtown Megaplex, one that was apparently new, and interesting. Rather than walking, he hopped one of the overcrowded busses heading that way, and after a few moments of shoving his way off the bus, had arrived at the club. Walking inside proved a little difficult, as there was a very long line of people waiting to be let in. Again his height advantage played itself to his advantage, and he was picked out of the crowd to be let in sooner. It was almost as if he was standing out a little more than usual…

His mind wandered to the coin in his pocket, and he rubbed it again for good luck. The club itself was a large place, full of vaulted ceilings and murals painted on the wall. There was one picture that grabbed his attention the most. A large blue dragon was sitting on a hill, looking at a sun set. Nobody else gave the strange part of the mural any notice, yet one person came over when they noticed Dave starting at it with his mouth agape.

“Stunning artwork is it not? Its my favorite.”
“Huh, what?”
Dave turned around to see the mystery man from his store looking at the same part of the mural he was. Immediately the hairs on the back of his neck stood up on end, and his paranoia kicked into overdrive. A little snap in the back of his head reminded him of the coin, to which he promptly fished out.

“I believe this is yours sir. We’re you not the one who left it on my counter yesterday evening?”

Over the rising blare of techno music, and flashing lights, the man merely smiled. Something about that smile caught Dave’s attention. It wasn’t the whiteness of his teeth, or how strait they we’re. No, it was their shape. The man in front of Dave had fangs!

“Why yes young man. I left this behind. But I can already see it has begun its work. I’ll take it back now.”

Such an odd statement from such an odd man. Dave hadn’t realized that a bit of his rash was peeking out from the bottom of his shorts. He promptly handed over the coin, and made a move to leave. The strange man grabbed a hold of his arm, and held him fast.

“You may not know what is happening but I do, beware the hunters in the dark. Seek me out again if you need me.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”

A bouncer heard Dave yell, and moved over to see if there was a problem.

“Can I help you with something sir?”
“Hai, there is this weird man holding me!”
“Sir, there is nobody there. Have you had too much to drink? If so, I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

Dave looked to where the strange man was, and nothing remained. There was no trace of him at all.

“Sorry, he must have let me go, and wandered off.”
“Right.” Trying to not look back at the odd person whom was starting his way, Dave failed to notice a hooded form at the back of the large party room. Dave fled the club, and decided to walk home. He reached down to scratch at the rash on his leg, seeing it for the first time.

“What’s this? Oh I hope I’m not sick… I don’t get sick leave from Kaiju-san…”

Scratching at it some more, he hurried home. Once he exited the elevator to his floor, and entered his place, he firmly locked the door. All these strange things happening at the same time was almost too much for him. He had to admit to himself however, that it was tweaking his craving for adventure. Shrugging it off, he helped himself to a large, and early lunch. He barely noticed how much he was eating until he saw the pile of empty dishes rising in the sink.

“Wow… I’ve never eaten that much in one sitting! Maybe I’m sick or something… don’t you feed a cold?”

Cleaning up after himself, he suddenly felt rather lethargic. Dragging himself towards his makeshift bed, he piled it all into a rough circle once more, and collapsed into sleep almost instantly. During his rest a most strange thing happened. A black mark appeared on his palm, where he had first touched the coin. It was identical to the markings on the coin itself, and the seemed to burrow their way into his flesh. Soon there was no trace of them, but the red mark on his side started to spread. His entire leg turned an angry red within moments, and soon the rest of his skin changed color. It was if ink had been spilled over his entire body.

Something made a loud noise outside, and Dave woke up with a start. Looking at his new clock, he saw that it was only mid afternoon. When he would have been waking up anyways. Shrugging somewhat, he stood up once more to head off for a shower.

“Must have still been tired from last night… oh well… a shower will wake me up.”

Wandering past his mirror, he didn’t notice that every inch of flesh on his body was a deep red. Almost as if he’d been out in the sun way too long. Stepping into the shower, he cranked the water temperature to high, and relaxed under the near scalding flow. Little did he know that the heat was enough that it should have been burning him. But somehow he emerged from the steam unscaved, and toweled off. After wiping clear the mirror at the sink, Dave nearly jumped through the ceiling.

“Holy crap! My skin! Its… red?”

Looking himself over, he rubbed down his slightly rough feeling hide.

“Hmm… maybe I had the water on too hot? That must be it! I’ve cooked myself. I hope it goes away by tomorrow.”

Once again totally missing the hint that something was different about him, Dave plunked himself in front of the TV for another enjoyable slothly afternoon of cartoon watching. He absently scratched at his sides as he did, still mildly uncomfortable with his thick red skin. Outside on his deck, a small blue reptilian form was perching on the railing.

“So it has begun… good luck.”

Dave suddenly felt strange. His feet went numb, and they looked as if they we’re swelling. He stared down with mixed confusion and wonder as his feet bent and stretched, contorting to a new shape. Then the numbness left, and all he knew was fire.
“Sonnava bitch!”

The pain was horrible, wracking up and down his whole body in electric arcs like a whip. His feet split apart in three places, reforming into grotesque paws with three large toes. Sharp talons pushed their way out of the ends of each new toe, followed by one large claw on his ankle. His feet continued to enlarge, until they we’re twice the size they used to be. Over two feet long, and very bulky. As quickly as the pain had started, it was gone. Blinking away some tears, Dave looked down at his new equipment. Flexing each three gigantic toes proved that they were indeed his own. He reached down, and gave each one a touch with his still human hands. They we’re rough to the touch, with what appeared to be scales covering their tops.

“Ok… this is too weird… Just what is going ooooonnn… argh!”

Not too long after he had checked out his new feet, the pain began again. He almost vomited up what little food remained in his stomach, and set his jaw to try to ride the pain through. His legs bulged and twisted, growing longer and thicker as they reshaped into something new. Something alien, though still human. They kept their basic configuration, but just became much more bulky, up to an equal size of his new feet. Now Dave looked comical. With a gigantic pair of legs, and huge reptilian like paws, while still having a human torso, he looked amusing indeed. By now Dave had realized that the transformation was probably not going to just stop half way, and he braced himself for more pain.

A few moments passed before anything else happened, so Dave got the opportunity to attempt to stand. It was difficult at first, as he now walked on the front of his feet, not on the balls. He felt very powerful with his new legs, but didn’t get the chance to enjoy it. Suddenly he felt a pressure deep in his chest, and his rib cage started to thicken and expand. Watching with awe and fear, his chest and entire torso bulged out to match his legs, thickening up, and getting covered in scales just like the rest of him. His arms followed next, doubling in size, and nearly doubling in length. His hands generally stayed the same, minus his elongating fingers, growing palms, and the new talons that sprouted at the tips of each digit.

Then a searing pain began at each one of his temples. He heard his own skull crack and shatter, as did he hear his jaw snap and reform. He swooned from the pain, falling down onto the floor with a heavy thump. His head stretched and grew into that of a dragon, gaining large fangs in his powerful maw. His ears grew and became pointy, sticking out and up from the side of his head. Behind those, fin like bands of flesh and hide poked out, adding an alien touch to his changing body. Two large white horns of bone poked out from the back of his head, and shot forward to make an impressive rack. His black hair grew out a little longer; forming a messy main that topped his already messed up head. Next, a row of small spines poked out down the length of his spinal column, and enlarged to be half a foot long. They quickly lowered against his back however, providing a hidden defense.

Dave was starting to stir and awaken, just when his shoulder blades started to bulge. A second set of arms sprouted from behind his existing pair, and stuck high into the air. Except instead of fingers, this set of arms started to sprout a tough leathery membrane between its ending digits. Thus huge arm like wings we’re now added with a double-shoulder design to his torso. They twitched slightly, folding up upon his back as if they had always been there. A loud ripping sound brought Dave fully awake, as a sharp spike pushed its way out from just above his butt, and started to reveal the makings of a long tail. It sprouted out about 7 feet, and thickened up massively at its base, tapering to a slightly thinner mass of scale and hide, capped by a solitary sharp spade. Dave groaned, and attempted to stand. Despite the high ceilings, he bumped his head on the plaster. Processing this newest bit of information, his eyes bulged open wide. They we’re a bright amber, flashing somewhat in the rooms light. Dave looked up, and the end of his muzzle smacked right into the bumpy ceiling. That meant he was 10’ tall. Suddenly he felt glad for landing a place with such high ceilings.

Looking around at himself, he was amazed to say the least. His whole body was a mix of dragon, and human. And it seemed to be leaning closer to the dragon half. He was suddenly reminded of the dragon in his dreams, and smirked somewhat. Opening his muzzle, he was baffled by his new deep voice.

“So I am like he is now… Strange.”

Using his sharp talons to scratch his scaled hide, he unconsciously emitted a purr of satisfaction. Before he had the chance to contemplate how he purred at all, he felt strange all over again.

“Oh no.... what now!”

His already large and bulky frame started to widen. New muscle mass forced its way underneath his flesh, making his arms and legs thicken up massively. Each limb was now the width of a tree trunk, with huge ball like bulges up and down their scaly surface. His chest widened out and grew as well. A massive 6-pack sprouted, tightening up to feel like steel. His neck widened slightly, better supporting his huge head. And finally, his wing muscles bulged and grew, followed by his already massive tail. Giving another very satisfied purr, he looked his new buff dragon body over.

“Wow… this isn’t exactly what I planned for my day off…”
“Nobody plans this kind of thing young one.”

Dave spun around instinctively brandishing his sharp claws and growling slightly. He saw the blue dragon from his dreams, sitting on his balcony. He was not as big as he was in the dream, but of equal height to Dave.

“Who… Who the hell are you? Are you the one who caused this?”
“In a way yes young one. You have the mark of the beast. The blessed. Lycanthrope. I merely helped you wake up sooner. It would have happened eventually. You should be thanking me actually; I prevented your first change from happening in public. Let me tell you, it’s not a pretty sight.”

The dragon-man casually walked in off the balcony, bending low to fit through the small door. He padded noisily over to Dave’s stereo, and switched it on. Pink Floyd’s “Another brick in the wall” Started to play at a decent volume, and the blue dragon-man smiled somewhat at the irony.

“Ah pink Floyd… what a coincidence.”
“Just who the hell are you mister?”
