Most elephants take on the appearance of gentle giants. But while Hux is certainly a giant, he is anything but gentle.
In his youth, Hux was a fairly ordinary calf. That was until he was injured during an attack by ivory poachers in which he also witnessed the killing of his parents. The trauma afflicted him deeply throughout his childhood, but upon his transition into adolescence, it began to manifest itself outwardly as vicious, vengeful rage - vowing to kill any would-be poachers that he encounters.
So deep is Hux's agony and anger over his childhood however that he has developed a fierce hatred for all anthropomorphic forms of life. Local villagers have become terrified of attacks from 'the elephant with the blood-red eyes' - a condition some say resulted from his childhood injuries. Furthermore, he is said to be highly irritable in general and very easily provoked, even taking his anger out on innocent animals who happen to invade his space, no matter how small or harmless.
Yet according to the few who have borne witness to one of Hux's attacks and survived, they have observed his mood change dramatically upon killing. His rage cools, his body relaxes, and he enters an unnerving state of quiet, focused control as he calmly carries out his kill. It is as if his only means of soothing the pain over how his parents' lives were taken is simply to take a life himself - and even then, the pain soon returns.
Despite the vast quantity of art within the furry fandom focused on giant, powerful animals, there is surprisingly little available depicting the largest land-roaming creatures currently on the planet. Thankfully, having been drawing Hux since around 2005, it is a deficit which I have slowly been seeking to redress with my own work.
Much like my other 'feral' characters, Hux's scenarios mainly revolve around settings within a wild, natural environment. And much like the others, his design is largely that of a generic African elephant, with the exception of his angry red eyes.
