Welcome to the Tutorials page

This page features a variety of tutorials and demonstrations which explain some of the methods I use for creating my work, as well as offering some general tips and instructions for artists and animators.

While I have some qualifications in art, I have had no formal training in producing digital artwork or animations, so please bear in mind that the techniques displayed may not be the most efficient or effective - they are merely the methods I have developed over the years which I have found to be suitable for my purposes.

My current software for creating images is Corel PaintShop Photo Pro (X3), with the use of a Wacom Bamboo Fun graphics tablet for colouring work and a Canon CanoScan LiDE 200 scanner for uploading the original pencil drawings on which my pictures are based. For animation, I currently use Adobe Flash Professional (CS5.5) with support from Adobe Audition (CS5.5) for soundtrack recording and mixing. These are the tools on which the methods shown in my tutorials/demonstrations are based.

(Other programs I have used in the past for my gallery content include: Adobe Photoshop 6, Adobe Flash Professional CS3, Adobe Illustrator CS2, Adobe Illustrator CS5.5, IrfanView 4.00, Jasc Animation Shop 3.11, Jasc Paint Shop Pro 6, Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.04, NCH Wavepad, Windows Movie Maker.)

Colour Preparation Tutorial

This tutorial demonstrates my method for preparing a scanned pencil drawing for digital colouring. It shows how you can convert your drawing into a purely black-and-white outline that can be filled with colour, as well as how to set up your image for separate background and subject layers, and also how you can preserve your original pencil outline in your final picture.

Shading & Lighting Effects: "Party Dude Pounce"

This step-by-step video takes you through the stages of my technique for adding shading and lighting effects to my pictures. The tutorial shows you how to set up layers, what different brush options do, how to apply shading/lighting and carry out blending, and how to tidy up your work at the end. The whole process takes many hours, but I have cut this down to around 15 minutes of the essentials which you can view in real-time as I carried them out on this picture.

Shading & Texturing Demonstration: "Hux Profile 2012"

This time-lapse video demonstrates my technique for shading pictures once they have been coloured, using multiple players and a combination of Paint Brush, Airbrush and Smudge Brush tools. The clip is about 3½ minutes long and runs at about 64x of realtime speed - the actual process took around 3 hours and 45 minutes.
